Cesena, March 17th, 1878
Dearest Cousin Clelia,
I hope this letter finds you in perfect health.
With a heart full of joy and admiration, I wish to tell you about a recent visit I made to our dear cousin Amedeo, who has finally completed his new residence in Cesena.
It is a magnificent home, situated in an unparalleled location. Very close to the road that links Ravenna to Rome, yet nestled in absolute silence and the lushest greenery. You would never imagine that such a peaceful paradise lies only ten minutes on foot from the historic center of the city, so well is it shielded and secluded by the surrounding nature.
The villa rises along the banks of the Savio River and enjoys an exceptionally favorable climate. Summer is always cooled by a gentle breeze, while winter is softly protected by the tall trees that adorn the garden. In fact, the entire estate, which extends over more than 15,000 square meters, is surrounded by groves of oaks and carefully chosen trees, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and freshness that could hardly be more ideal.
The park around it is a true green treasure chest, where every corner radiates a peace that few places can offer. Upon entering the villa, I found the perfect blend of a residence worthy of our noble family and the ingenuity of our cousin, who managed to structure it in such a way that each of his four children has their own private apartment.
On the ground floor, Juliette and Amedeo have reserved for themselves a space that is a delight of lightness and freshness, entirely made of wood and fabric, with rooms decorated in French-style boiserie. A large hall with a fireplace creates a perfect ambiance for warmer days, thanks also to the oak veranda reminiscent of Tuscan lemon houses.
Going up to the first floor, he thought of sweet Henriette, with a spacious apartment featuring wide rooms, polished oak floors, and walls adorned with French wallpaper. From one window you can see the Rocca of Cesena; from another, the riverbank winding along the property.
Also on the first floor, Clotilde’s apartment is a true masterpiece of elegance. The scagliola-painted walls and walnut ceilings draw the eye and offer a noble atmosphere, with a lovely view over the park and the surrounding hills.
The second floor holds the brightest and most colorful attic, with two bedrooms and skylights that flood every corner with natural light. The vibrant colors and fine details were thoughtfully designed for the eccentric Umberto.
For young Giambattista, Amedeo transformed a large room into four separate spaces, including a kitchen-living area that faces west, bathed in the golden light of sunset.
I can’t help but admire the wisdom in having created a home that meets everyday needs while being located in a place perfect for a peaceful retreat, far from the world.
I embrace you warmly and await your reply with great eagerness.
With all my affection,
Your loving cousin,
Carlo Alberto
